Vermont & the 2030 Net Zero Energy Standard An Evening Forum to Build Understanding and Support
Thursday June 16, 2011 at 7:00PM
Richmond Free Library 201 Bridge Street, Richmond, VT 05477

The folks at Building for Social Responsibility ask you to join them in discussing the inclusion of a Net Zero Energy Standard in Vermont’s Comprehensive Energy Plan (set to roll-out in October 2011).

They’re proposing a building standard requiring buildings to be built for Net Zero Energy by 2020 or 2030, as a number of other states have already done. Approval of such a measure, Building for Social Responsibility argues, would demonstrate Vermont’s commitment to a sustainable energy future and help to greatly reduce Climate Changing emissions.

According to Building for Social Responsibility, having this Net Zero requirement in the plan will –
– Provide incentive for the marketplace to take action against climate change in an industry noted as the largest contributor of greenhouse gases.
– Lenders and appraisers will prepare for financing and appraising these buildings that may cost more up front, but then cost nothing to operate.
– Homeowners will become more familiar with the term and the cost savings associated with such a home; demand will rise.

The Vermont-Sandia Smart Grid Partnership is meeting today and tomorrow at the Sheraton in Burlington. Energy officials from the local, state, and national levels will be in attendance along with Vermont political representation, and countless Vermont energy professionals. Several Vermont Smart Grid Working Group members, including AJ Rossman and Ethan Goldman, will be attending, too.

From the Vermont-Sandia Partnership website: “More than any other state in the nation, Vermont has forged effective partnerships among its policymakers, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, privately owned companies and citizen groups, leveraging their expertise and collective willpower to spur energy innovation statewide.

These efforts reflect growing partnerships statewide and a deep commitment to energy sustainability. Vermont’s efforts have been further strengthened by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy to support a utilities-led smart-grid effort called eEnergy Vermont and also a partnership with Sandia National Laboratories to help create the Nation’s first statewide 21st-century energy infrastructure.”

Events of this nature will certainly help pave the way for a green energy future in Vermont! While it may not be possible for all members of the Smart Grid Working Group to attend this week’s event, all should certainly feel welcome to contact AJ or Ethan to compare notes, and to receive updates and thoughts on event proceedings. A more involved VSGWG discussion of event findings may be forthcoming, too. To learn more about the Vermont-Sandia Partnership, please click here.
